"Prometheus" to be released with "R" rating

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Ridley Scott's sci-fi horror film will hit theaters with an R rating on June 8.

20th Century Fox has decided to let the R rating that it received from the MPAA's ratings board stand, rather than to make cuts for a PG-13 or lower rating.

The rating means that 'Prometheus' can't be seen by moviegoers 17 and under without a parent or guardian - a potential liability for a big-budget film with a potential big appeal to a younger audience.

The film, which stars 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' actress Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender and Guy Pearce in a late 21st-century tale about a spaceship crew exploring an advanced alien civilization in order to learn more about the origins of humanity, received the R rating because of 'sci-fi violence including some intense images, and brief language.'
